ESC Tyres: get up to 1,000 € for switching to efficient tyres

Find out how to generate Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs) by upgrading your tyres to higher efficiency. Up to 1,000 € per heavy vehicle, plus benefits for fleets and passenger cars.

CAE Market25 March 20268 min

Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs) are not just for building renovations or electric cars. If you have changed the tyres on your vehicle — car, van or lorry — for ones with greater energy efficiency, you can generate ESCs and receive money for the fuel savings they certify. In Spain, regulated by Real Decreto 36/2023, these certificates allow you to obtain between 30 and over 1,000 € depending on the type of vehicle and the efficiency improvement.

The system is simple: tyres account for up to 20% of a vehicle's fuel consumption. By replacing tyres of a lower class with class A ones, rolling resistance is reduced and, with it, fuel expenditure. That reduction generates a certifiable energy saving that has real economic value.

How much can I get for changing my tyres?

The amount depends on three key factors: the efficiency improvement (from which class to which class), the number of tyres and the annual mileage of the vehicle. Here are some indicative examples:

Vehicle Improvement Indicative amount
Car (4 units) E → A 40–54 €
Van (4 units) D → A 41–55 €
Lorry (12 units) G → A 913–1,217 €

Want to know the exact amount for your case? Use our interactive calculator below to get a personalised estimate.

For transport fleets the impact is exponential: a company with 10 lorries upgrading from class E to class A can generate over 5,000 € in ESCs, in addition to the direct fuel savings year after year.

The tyre energy label: your key reference

Since May 2021, Reglamento UE 2020/740 requires all tyres sold in the European Union to carry an energy label similar to that of household appliances. This label classifies the tyre according to three criteria:

  • Fuel consumption efficiency (from A to G): measures rolling resistance. A class A tyre can save up to 0.6 litres/100 km compared to a lower-class one.
  • Wet grip (from A to G): measures braking distance on wet surfaces. Class A stops up to 18 metres sooner than a lower class at 80 km/h.
  • External rolling noise (from A to C): measures noise emitted in decibels.

To generate ESCs, what matters is the first classification: fuel consumption efficiency. The greater the improvement (for example, from class E to class A), the more energy saving is certified and the more money you receive.

Which tyres are eligible to generate ESCs?

For a tyre change to generate Energy Saving Certificates, the following requirements must be met:

  • The new tyres must have a higher efficiency class than the ones they replace (for example, from C to A, from E to B, etc.).
  • The improvement must be documented with the EU energy label of the new tyres and, where possible, of the old ones.
  • It applies to all vehicle types: passenger cars (C1), vans (C2) and heavy vehicles (C3).
  • The tyres must be approved and carry the marking in accordance with Reglamento UE 2020/740.

Retreaded tyres, second-hand tyres, and those without a European energy label are not eligible.

Tyres account for up to 20 % of a vehicle's fuel consumption. Switching to class A not only saves fuel — it generates Energy Saving Certificates you can monetise.

What documentation do I need?

The required documentation is very straightforward:

For the new tyres:

  • Purchase invoice (with brand, model and size).
  • EU energy label of the tyre (fuel consumption efficiency class).
  • Photographs of the fitted tyres.

For the old tyres (where possible):

  • Energy label or technical data sheet of the previous tyre.
  • Photographs prior to the change.

For the vehicle:

  • Vehicle registration certificate or technical data sheet.
  • Annual mileage (odometer or declaration).

Personal documentation:

  • DNI or NIE of the holder.
  • Bank account ownership certificate.

At CAE Market we take care of all the document management. You simply provide us with the invoices and photos, and we do the rest.

Can I claim if I already changed my tyres?

Yes. ESCs have a retroactivity period of up to 3 years. This means that if you changed your tyres for more efficient ones from March 2023 onwards, you can still generate and monetise the certificates.

For hauliers and companies with fleets, this can amount to thousands of euros from tyre changes that were already carried out as part of routine maintenance. Do not leave that money on the table.

For tyre workshops: a business opportunity

If you are a tyre workshop, ESCs represent an opportunity to offer an added-value service to your customers:

  • Competitive differentiation: offer your customers the chance to recover money from the tyre change they were already going to make.
  • Customer loyalty: the customer associates the saving with your workshop and comes back.
  • Promotion of premium tyres: the ESC offsets part of the extra cost of a class A tyre compared to a lower-class one.
  • No investment needed: CAE Market handles all the processing. The workshop only needs to provide the documentation from the change.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tyre ESC?

It is an Energy Saving Certificate generated when you replace the tyres on a vehicle with ones of greater energy efficiency (lower rolling resistance). It certifies the fuel saving produced by the change and can be sold on the ESC market to Obligated Subjects (major energy retailers).

How much money can I get?

It depends on the type of vehicle, the number of tyres and the efficiency class improvement. A car can obtain between 25 and 55 €, a van between 40 and 80 €, and a lorry between 500 and 1,220 €. Fleets multiply these amounts per vehicle. At CAE Market we give you an exact, free valuation.

What efficiency class do my new tyres need?

The new tyres must have a higher fuel consumption efficiency class than the ones they replace. Ideally class A, as it maximises the certifiable saving, but any class improvement generates ESCs (for example, from D to B).

How do I know the efficiency class of my tyres?

All tyres sold in the EU since May 2021 must carry the European energy label. The fuel consumption efficiency class ranges from A (most efficient) to E (least efficient). You can check the label on the product data sheet, on the manufacturer's website or by asking your workshop.

Is it only for lorries, or does it work for cars too?

It works for all types of vehicles: cars, vans, lorries, buses and even motorcycles. However, the amount is proportionally greater for heavy vehicles with more tyres and higher annual mileage.

Can I generate ESCs if I already changed my tyres months ago?

Yes. ESCs have a retroactivity period of up to 3 years. If you changed your tyres for more efficient ones after March 2023, you can still generate and monetise the certificates. This is especially interesting for fleets with several accumulated changes.

What documentation do I need?

You need the purchase invoice for the new tyres, their EU energy label, the vehicle registration certificate and your DNI/NIE. If you have the label from the previous tyres, even better. CAE Market takes care of all the document management.

Can a tyre workshop process ESCs for its customers?

Yes. Workshops can offer ESC processing as an added-value service. CAE Market works directly with workshops throughout Spain: the workshop provides the documentation from the change and we manage the entire process. It is a means of differentiation and customer loyalty at no cost to the workshop.

Can it be combined with other energy saving measures?

Yes. Tyre ESCs are compatible with other efficiency measures such as the installation of telematics systems. A transport company can generate ESCs for both simultaneously, maximising the economic return on its efficiency investments.

Is there any cost for me?

There is no upfront cost whatsoever. CAE Market works on a success basis: we only charge a commission if you receive payment for your ESCs. If the certificate is not generated, you pay nothing.

Are retreaded tyres eligible?

No. Only new tyres that carry the European energy label in accordance with Reglamento UE 2020/740 are eligible. Retreaded tyres, second-hand tyres or those without an energy label do not qualify to generate ESCs.

How long does the process take?

The complete process usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks from the moment you send us the documentation. We keep you informed at every step of the process.
