ESC Electric Car: get up to 1,000 € for switching to electric

Find out how to generate Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs) when buying an electric vehicle. Up to 1,000 € in savings, compatible with MOVES III and Plan Auto+.

CAE Market19 March 20267 min

Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs) are titles that certify the energy savings generated by replacing a combustion vehicle with a 100% electric one. In Spain, regulated by Real Decreto 36/2023, they allow you to obtain between 500 and 1,000 € per vehicle. They are compatible with Plan MOVES III, Plan Auto+ and IRPF tax deductions.

If you have bought — or are thinking of buying — an electric car, you can monetise this energy saving. And if you bought your electric vehicle some time ago, you can still claim: ESCs have retroactivity of up to 3 years (since March 2023).

How much can I get for my electric car?

The amount from ESCs for the purchase of an electric vehicle ranges between 500 and 1,000 € per vehicle, according to ESC market data in Spain (average price: 100–130 €/MWh). The exact amount depends on several factors:

  • The type of electric vehicle purchased (car, van, electric motorbike…).
  • The energy savings generated compared to the replaced combustion vehicle.
  • The ESC market price at the time of processing.

At CAE Market we provide you with a free valuation with the exact amount for your specific case.

Which vehicles are eligible?

Not all vehicles generate ESCs. The main requirements are:

  • New vehicle: it must be 100% electric (BEV). Plug-in hybrids (PHEV), conventional hybrids and gas vehicles are not eligible.
  • Old vehicle: it must be an internal combustion vehicle (petrol, diesel, LPG or natural gas).
  • The old vehicle must have been registered in the same owner's name for at least 12 months.
  • Both vehicles must be registered in the name of the same person or entity.

Requirements to generate ESCs with your electric car

For the operation to generate valid Energy Saving Certificates, the following requirements must be met:

  • The replaced vehicle must be a combustion vehicle and must have been in your name for at least 12 months.
  • The new vehicle must be 100% electric (BEV) and registered in Spain.
  • The old vehicle must be permanently deregistered or transferred to a third party.
  • The replacement period is 3 months before to 6 months after the registration of the new electric vehicle.
  • The owner of the old and the new vehicle must be the same person.

ESCs are fully compatible with the main public grants: MOVES III, Plan Auto+ and personal income tax deductions.

Is it compatible with other grants? ESCs vs MOVES III vs Plan Auto+

Yes. ESCs are fully compatible with the main public grants for the purchase of electric vehicles. Here is the comparison:

Grant Indicative amount Compatible with ESCs Main requirements
ESCs 500–1,000 € Replace combustion with BEV, same owner for 12 months
Plan MOVES III Up to 7,000 € Yes New electric vehicle, scrapping of old vehicle
Plan Auto+ Up to 5,000 € Yes Vehicle fleet renewal
IRPF deduction 15% (max. 3,000 €) Yes Purchase of electric vehicle for private use
Charging point 15% (max. 4,000 €) Yes Installation of home charging point

This means you can combine ESCs with all these grants to maximise your total savings when purchasing your electric car.

  • Latest IVTM receipt (Vehicle Road Tax).
  • Proof of permanent deregistration or transfer.

For the new vehicle (electric):

  • Purchase invoice.

Can I claim if I already bought my electric car?

Yes. ESCs have a retroactivity period of up to 3 years. This means that if you bought your electric car from March 2023 onwards, you are still in time to generate and monetise the certificates.

Many electric vehicle owners are unaware of this right. If you have already made the replacement, do not miss the opportunity.

For car dealerships: a business opportunity

If you are a vehicle dealership, ESCs represent an opportunity to offer an added-value service to your customers:

  • Competitive differentiation: offer your customers the chance to recover between 500 and 1,000 € from the electric car purchase they were already going to make.
  • Boost electric sales: the ESC lowers the price barrier compared to a combustion vehicle, making the purchase decision easier.
  • No investment needed: CAE Market handles all the processing. The dealership only needs to provide the sale documentation.

Frequently asked questions

What is an electric vehicle ESC?

It is an Energy Saving Certificate generated when a combustion vehicle is replaced by a 100% electric one. It certifies the energy savings produced by the change and can be sold on the ESC market to Obligated Subjects (large energy retailers).

How much money can I get?

Between 500 and 1,000 € per vehicle, depending on the type of vehicle, the energy savings generated and the ESC market price at the time of processing. At CAE Market we provide you with an exact and free valuation.

Are plug-in hybrids (PHEV) eligible?

No. Only 100% electric vehicles (BEV) generate ESCs. Plug-in hybrids, conventional hybrids and gas vehicles are not eligible for this certificate.

Do I have to deregister my old car?

Yes. The old combustion vehicle must be permanently deregistered or transferred to a third party. The deadline to do so is 3 months before to 6 months after the registration of the new electric vehicle.

Can I get the ESC if I already received Plan MOVES or Plan Auto+?

Yes. ESCs are fully compatible with MOVES III grants, Plan Auto+ and IRPF tax deductions for the purchase of an electric vehicle. You can combine all these grants without any issue.

How long does the process take?

The complete process usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks from when you send us the documentation. We keep you informed at every step of the process.

Does the old car need to be in my name?

Yes. The replaced combustion vehicle must have been in the name of the same owner as the new electric vehicle for at least 12 months before the replacement.

Can I generate an ESC if I bought my electric car more than a year ago?

Yes. ESCs have retroactivity of up to 3 years. If you bought your electric vehicle after March 2023 and replaced a combustion vehicle, you can still generate and monetise the certificates.

Is there any cost to me?

There is no upfront cost. CAE Market works on a success basis: we only charge a commission if you receive the payment for your ESCs. If the certificate is not generated, you pay nothing.

Can I generate ESCs for a company car or leased vehicle?

It depends on the case. In general, the owner of the new vehicle must be the same as the owner of the replaced vehicle. For companies and leasing arrangements, there are specific considerations that need to be analysed. Contact us to study your particular situation.

Can a company with multiple vehicles process this?

Yes. Companies and self-employed professionals can process ESCs for company vehicles. If you have multiple electric vehicles that have replaced combustion vehicles, we can manage all the cases together. The process is similar but scaled up.
