ESC Appliances: generate extra revenue for every fridge, washing machine or dishwasher you sell

Only 4 appliance types generate ESCs in Spain. If you sell fridges, freezers, washing machines or dishwashers, each unit generates extra income. At no cost.

CAE Market27 March 20267 min

Every high-efficiency fridge, freezer, washing machine or dishwasher sold in Spain can generate Energy Saving Certificates (ESCs). It's extra revenue regulated by Royal Decree 36/2023 that most retailers don't know about — and it adds up with every unit sold.

The amounts per unit range from around 5 € to over 20 € per appliance. But if you sell hundreds or thousands a year, the numbers change completely. And the best part: it's compatible with Plan Renove and any regional grants. If you've already sold efficient appliances since March 2023, you can claim the ESCs from those sales with retroactivity of up to 3 years.

How much can an appliance retailer generate?

The ESC amount per appliance depends on the type of appliance and the energy efficiency improvement over the replaced model. As a reference:

  • Fridges and freezers generate the most: between 10 and 25 € per unit, thanks to their higher annual energy consumption.
  • Washing machines and dishwashers generate more modest amounts: between 5 and 10 € per unit.

Sounds small? Do the maths with your annual sales volume. One fridge is 15 €. A thousand fridges is 15,000 €. Add freezers, washing machines and dishwashers, and the ESC becomes a meaningful revenue line for your business — with no investment and no changes to your sales process.

At CAE Market we provide a free estimate based on your actual sales volume.

Which appliances generate ESCs?

Not all appliances generate Energy Saving Certificates. Only 4 types have official data sheets approved by the Ministry for Ecological Transition:

  • Fridges (including fridge-freezer combis)
  • Freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Dishwashers

Appliances that do NOT currently generate ESCs:

  • Tumble dryers
  • Ovens
  • Ceramic and induction hobs
  • Microwaves
  • Small appliances (toasters, coffee makers, vacuum cleaners…)

If your shop sells all 4 eligible types, you can generate ESCs for every unit that goes out the door. If you only sell some of them, you can still monetise those sales.

Requirements to generate ESCs with appliances

For an appliance purchase to generate ESCs, the following conditions must be met:

  • The new appliance must be highly energy efficient, according to the current EU energy label. Its consumption must be below the reference value set by the Ministry.
  • The appliance must be new (not refurbished or second-hand).
  • The purchase must take place in Spain.
  • It does not need to replace an old appliance: first-time purchases also generate ESCs (e.g. for a new home).

For retailers, this greatly simplifies the process: every efficient appliance you sell can generate an ESC, regardless of whether the customer is replacing an old one or making a first-time purchase.

A fridge generates about 15 € in ESCs. But if you sell 1,000 a year, that's 15,000 €. Multiply that by freezers, washing machines and dishwashers, and the ESC becomes a revenue line you didn't know existed.

4

Is it compatible with Plan Renove and other grants?

Grant Indicative amount Compatible with ESCs Main requirements
ESCs 5–25 € per unit Purchase of a high energy efficiency appliance
Plan Renove appliances Up to 200 € Yes Varies by autonomous region
Regional grants Variable Yes Depends on the autonomous region
Income tax deduction Variable Yes If part of an energy renovation

For retailers, this is a powerful sales argument: the customer can combine the ESC with Plan Renove and any regional grants. The ESC is additional income that doesn't compete with any other subsidy — it stacks. Offering this information to customers can drive premium product sales and set you apart from the competition.

What documentation is needed?

The required documentation is straightforward:

Old appliance:

  • Photographs of the removed appliance.
  • Brand and model, if available.

New appliance:

  • Purchase invoice.
  • EU energy label.
  • Product data sheet.

Personal documentation:

  • Buyer's DNI or NIE.
  • Bank account certificate.

For high-volume retailers, CAE Market integrates the process into your sales workflow. We handle batch processing: you provide the data for each sale and we take care of everything else. No changes to your day-to-day operations.

Can ESCs be claimed for past sales?

Yes. ESCs have a retroactivity period of up to 3 years. This means that if you've sold efficient appliances since March 2023, you can still generate and monetise the certificates from those sales.

For retailers, this is especially relevant: all fridge, freezer, washing machine and dishwasher sales you've made since March 2023 can generate ESCs. Do the maths with your volume and you'll see it's revenue you've left on the table.

7

For appliance retailers: a business opportunity

If you're an appliance retailer, ESCs represent an opportunity to generate recurring extra income with every sale:

  • Competitive differentiation: offer your customers a benefit your competitors don't know about yet. The ESC is money the customer receives for a purchase they were already going to make.
  • Drive premium sales: the ESC lowers the price barrier for efficient appliances, making it easier to sell higher-margin products.
  • Volume revenue: each unit sold generates a small amount. At scale, that small amount becomes a meaningful revenue line.
  • No investment: CAE Market handles all the paperwork. Your team doesn't need to do anything differently.
  • Retroactivity: you can claim ESCs for all sales made since March 2023.

Frequently asked questions

What is an appliance ESC?

It's an Energy Saving Certificate generated when replacing an old appliance with a more energy-efficient one. It certifies the energy savings produced by the change and can be sold on the ESC market to Obligated Parties (large energy retailers). It's regulated by Royal Decree 36/2023.

How much can an appliance retailer generate?

It depends on your sales volume and appliance type. Fridges and freezers generate between 10 and 25 € per unit, while washing machines and dishwashers generate between 5 and 10 €. A shop selling 1,000 fridges a year can generate over 15,000 € annually in ESCs. At CAE Market we provide an exact estimate based on your real volume.

Which appliances generate ESCs?

Only 4 types: fridges (including fridge-freezer combis), freezers, washing machines and dishwashers. They are the only ones with official data sheets approved by the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Other appliances (ovens, dryers, hobs, microwaves, etc.) do not currently generate ESCs.

Do ovens, dryers or ceramic hobs generate ESCs?

No. Currently only fridges, fridge-freezers, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers have approved official data sheets for generating Energy Saving Certificates. This could change in the future if the Ministry publishes new data sheets.

What energy class does the new appliance need?

The new appliance must be highly energy efficient, with consumption below the reference value set by the Ministry. The more efficient it is (e.g. class A vs class D), the higher the ESC amount generated.

Is it compatible with Plan Renove?

Yes, fully compatible. ESCs can be stacked with the appliance Plan Renove, regional grants and income tax deductions for energy renovation. The ESC is additional income that doesn't compete with any other subsidy.

Can ESCs be claimed for past sales?

Yes. ESCs have retroactivity of up to 3 years. If you've sold efficient appliances since March 2023, you can still generate and monetise the certificates from those sales. For high-volume retailers, this can represent a significant income.

How long does the process take?

The full process usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks from when you submit the documentation. For retailers with batch processing, timescales are optimised. We keep you informed at every step.

Is there any cost for the retailer?

There is no upfront cost. CAE Market works on a success basis: we only charge a commission if the certificate is generated and payment is received. If the ESC is not generated, you pay nothing.

Can I offer the ESC as a sales advantage to my customers?

Yes. Many retailers use the ESC as a selling point: the customer knows that, in addition to the appliance, they'll receive extra income for the energy savings it generates. It's a way to differentiate yourself from competitors and drive premium sales.

How does integration work for high-volume retailers?

CAE Market adapts the process to your operations. You can send us your sales data in batches and we handle all the paperwork: documentation, verification and sale of the ESCs. You don't need to change your sales process or train your team.

Can an individual also claim ESCs for their appliances?

Yes. If you've bought a high-efficiency fridge, freezer, washing machine or dishwasher for your home, you can generate an ESC. You don't need to have removed an old one. The individual amount is more modest (between 5 and 25 € depending on the appliance type), but it's money you didn't know was yours.
